8 New Publications from the Documents

The Tobacco Documents Bibliography has added 8 new papers/publications for March and April 2013!  These additions include papers on the tobacco industry and the use of "light" cigarette descriptors, the impact of pack design, and the alliance between the tobacco and alcohol industries, to name a few.

Publication Highlight:

A Historical Review of R. J. Reynolds' Strategies for Marketing Tobacco to Hispanics in the United States by L. Iglesias-Rios and M. Parascandola
American Journal of Public Health 2013 Mar 14. doi:10.2105/AJPH.2013.301256

Hispanics are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the United States, and smoking is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality among this population. The authors analyzed tobacco industry documents regarding R. J. Reynolds’ marketing strategies toward the Hispanic population using tobacco industry documents from the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu).  Analysis revealed that by 1980 the company had developed a sophisticated surveillance system to track the market behavior of Hispanic smokers and understand their psychographics, cultural values, and attitudes. This information was translated into targeted marketing campaigns for the Winston and Camel brands.

A few key documents from LTDL:

"Spanish-speaking consumers [are] extremely loyal to brands advertised to them but to win them takes more than simple translations of product labels from English to Spanish. It requires regular advertising in order to build up confidence in the product but once that confidence is gained, they can be expected to be loyal forever." 1969.

[Letter to Ricardo Gomez, Area Marketing Manager, RJR] "We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on being elected to the 1991 Board of Trustees of the Mexican and American Foundation...We are extremely proud to have you as a Board Member of the Foundation and would like to once again, compliment you and RJ Reynolds Tobacco for your support.  You are a great asset to RJ Reynolds and to the community." 1991.

"the newly arrived are less competent in the English language, less knowledgeable about American brands, and less sophisticated in their reactions to advertising on behalf of those brands."  1991.

New "Hemophiliac Case" Collection

New collection added today:

Factor VIII or IX Concentrate Blood Products – 58 documents dealing with the marketing and distribution of contaminated AHF (anti-hemophiliac factor) blood products.

A little background: Bayer and its Cutter Laboratories manufactured AHF (anti-hemophiliac factor), a blood product used by hemophiliacs to treat uncontrolled bleeding. In the late 1960s the corporation began manufacturing AHF using pools of blood (plasma) from thousands of donors, often recruited from populations at high risk for hepatitis. In the early 1980s Cutter Laboratories realized that its AHF was contaminated with HIV but its financial investment in the product was considered too high to destroy the inventory. Cutter continued to sell the contaminated AHF to markets willing to accept it, including overseas markets in Asia and Latin America, without the recommended precaution of heat treating the product to eliminate the risk. Customers were not informed of the risk and as a consequence, hemophiliacs who infused the HIV-contaminated AHF tested positive for HIV and developed AIDS.

These documents are from class action litigation against Bayer from both US and Taiwanese plaintiffs. While "the hemo case" involved HIV-infected hemophiliacs in the United States and abroad, these documents focus on the marketing and distribution of contaminated blood products in Asia, the so-called "dumping" aspect of the larger body of cases litigated.

In addition to the new collection, we have also added documents to our Neurontin Marketing and Sales Practices Litigation collection, a collection of documents on the misrepresentation of Neurontin’s effectiveness.  These 3 new documents are industry conducted research reports of double blind placebo controlled studies to determine the efficacy and safety of Neurontin (gabapentin) for use in migraines.  Please note: These are very lengthy documents (4000+ pages) and may take a while to download.

New Research from the Documents

The Tobacco Documents Bibliography has added 7 new papers/publications for January and February 2013!  These additions include papers on the tobacco industry and the Tea Party, PM's Project Sunrise, transnational tobacco companies in South Korea and smoking in veterans facilities.

Bibliography Highlight:

'To quarterback behind the scenes, third-party efforts': the tobacco industry and the Tea Party.
Amanda Fallin, Rachel Grana, & Stanton A Glantz
Tobacco Control 2013 Feb. http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/tobaccocontrol-2012-050815.

The authors used the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library, the Wayback Machine, LexisNexis, and other databases and websites to examine the tobacco companies' connections to the Tea Party.
Fallin, Grana and Glantz's comprehensive research connects the dots between grassroots smokers' rights movements, third-party groups funded by the industry such as Citizens for a Sound Economy, Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks, and the Tea Party.  The study concludes,
"Rather than being a purely grassroots movement that spontaneously developed in 2009, the Tea Party has developed over time, in part through decades of work by the tobacco industry and other corporate interests."

Philip Morris plan to create the National Smokers Alliance

Memo from Tim Hyde, RJR Director of National Field Operations - "thoughts on how we might build broad coalitions around the issue-cluster of freedom, choice, and privacy..."

Philip Morris designated Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE) as a 'Category A' organization for funding purposes, meaning they considered CSE to be in the 'largest and most important/sustained relationships' category. Founded in part by David Koch of Koch Industries, CSE started a US Tea Party project in 2002. The organization eventually split into 'Americans for Prosperity' and 'FreedomWorks' in 2004 - both playing a role in structuring the early stages of the Tea Party movement.
