Braga Brothers


Selected documents from the Braga Brothers Collection at the University of Florida.
The principal holdings in this collection are the administrative records of Louis V. Place, Jr., vice president of the W.J. McCahan Sugar Refining and Molasses Company, an affiliate of the Czarnikow-Rionda Company of New York. From the beginning of the 20th century until the early 1960s, Czarnikow-Rionda was one of North America's largest importers of sugar and molasses. Placé was the executive vice president of the McCahan Sugar Company of Philadelphia throughout the 1930s and until the company was sold to the American Sugar Refinery in 1944. In 1945, Placé was made a vice president in the Czarnikow-Rionda Company. During his tenure at McCahan, he was active in the sugar refining industry's trade organizations. He was a member of the executive committee of the Sugar Institute and later helped initiate the Sugar Research Foundation. During World War II, he served on the Industry Panel of Region IV of the National War Labor Board.

Among the correspondents in this collection: Ody Lamborn, (future Sugar Research Foundation Director) Horace Havemeyer, Ellsworth Bunker, Earl Babst, and Manuel Enrique Rionda, a vice president in the Czarnikow-Rionda Company of New York City and president of McCahan at during this time period.
