And there are 8,002 Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds
records that either have additional indexing information (people, organizations or brands) or have an actual document instead of one of those annoying Archive Location Variance sheets.
And, if that weren't enough, we're throwing in
125 Philip Morris records that the company changed for one reason or another.
Happy searching!

8 New Publications from the Documents
The
Tobacco Documents Bibliography has added 8 new papers/publications for March and April 2013! These additions include papers on the tobacco industry and the use of "light" cigarette descriptors, the impact of pack design, and the alliance between the tobacco and alcohol industries, to name a few.
Publication Highlight:
A Historical Review of R. J. Reynolds' Strategies for Marketing Tobacco to Hispanics in the United States by L. Iglesias-Rios and M. Parascandola
American Journal of Public Health 2013 Mar 14. doi:
10.2105/AJPH.2013.301256Hispanics are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the United States, and smoking is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality among this population. The authors analyzed tobacco industry documents regarding R. J. Reynolds’ marketing strategies toward the Hispanic population using tobacco industry documents from the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (
http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu). Analysis revealed that by 1980 the company had developed a sophisticated surveillance system to track the market behavior of Hispanic smokers and understand their psychographics, cultural values, and attitudes. This information was translated into targeted marketing campaigns for the Winston and Camel brands.
A few key documents from LTDL:
"Spanish-speaking consumers [are] extremely loyal to brands advertised to them but to win them takes more than simple translations of product labels from English to Spanish. It requires regular advertising in order to build up confidence in the product but once that confidence is gained, they can be expected to be loyal forever." 1969.
[Letter to Ricardo Gomez, Area Marketing Manager, RJR] "We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on being elected to the 1991 Board of Trustees of the Mexican and American Foundation...We are extremely proud to have you as a Board Member of the Foundation and would like to once again, compliment you and RJ Reynolds Tobacco for your support. You are a great asset to RJ Reynolds and to the community." 1991.
"the newly arrived are less competent in the English language, less knowledgeable about American brands, and less sophisticated in their reactions to advertising on behalf of those brands." 1991.Thursday, April 25, 2013
