Why is there no PDF for the document I found?

While searching on the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library, you may come across documents that have no PDF image, only the index record. Most of these records are of documents that were either considered "privileged" or "confidential" by the tobacco companies and because of this, they are only required to provide the document record, not the image.

In a US court of law, "privilege" is the right to refuse to divulge information obtained in a confidential relationship such as attorney/client communication.

"Confidential" documents are documents that supposedly contain trade secrets and information such as marketing plans and future research budgets that the companies feel should not be allowed into the public arena.

LTDL has had the records of privileged documents posted for a number of years now. Recently, the tobacco industry has started uploading their confidential document logs onto their own documents websites and we at LTDL have been grabbing up the documents records for our site. The companies are to provide quarterly updates to their confidential logs, listing new confidential document records and releasing documents that have been deemed no longer confidential. We will be tracking these updates and providing the actual documents once they have been cleared of the "confidential" status.

For anyone wishing to find these confidential document records and any "formerly confidential" documents now available for viewing:

To find "confidential" documents, search the Document Status field (st:) for the term "confidential" like:
st:confidential

Then add dates, names, specific company, etc. to narrow your search if you wish.

To find documents that were considered "confidential" but have since been released for viewing, search the Document Status field (st:) for the term "formerly" like:
st:formerly

In addition, 8,815 privileged RJ Reynolds documents were also added. To find these newly added privileged document records, search the date added to UCSF (ddu:) for todays date (20110127) and the document status field (st:) for the term "priv" = ddu:20110127 st:priv*
